Piedmont is primarily a mountainous region. The maritime Alps lie to the south of Turin and the rolling hills of the Monferrato and Langhe districts make up the landscape to the southeast of Turin. French was spoken in Piemonte until the end of the nineteenth century and still influences Piemontese dialects.
Turin
Turin, Torino in Italian, on the Po river is Italy's second industrial city. It retains a Baroque core and has a decidedly northern European bent. Turin is home to the famous relic the Sacra Sindone (Holy Shroud), believed to be the cloth in which Christ's body was wrapped when he was taken down from the cross.
South of Turin, Alba and Saluzzo
Saluzzoare perhaps the most enticing centres, the former a good base for visiting the wine cantinas, the latter convenient if you want to explore the western valleys; Asti, to the southeast, really comes to life during its famous medieval Palio. For the rest, winter sports and walking are the main activities, with Sestriere
Sestrierethe main skiing centre and the ascent of Monviso in the far west appealing to the climbing fraternity.
Food: Torino grissini, the famous long sticks of bread. Novara and Vercelli gorgonzola cheese. Bettelmatt cheese. Nutella by Ferrero Rocher. The local cuisine uses animal products such as butter, lard and 'strutto' or pork fat because the climate does not allow the cultivation of olives.
Wine: Asti Spumante, Nebbiolo of the Carema, Barolo DOCG (Red), Gavi DOC (White)
Tucked away in the rolling hills and vineyards of Cantarana (Italian translation is Singing Frog), this stunningly restored farmhousoffers you a truly unique and tranquil home from home experience, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the abundance of nature that will surround you.
